Subcutis
The layer of tissue directly underlying the dermis.
Not considered to constitute the true skin.
It consists primarily of connective (collagenous and elastic) tissue and fatty (adipose) tissue.
Sweat glands are located in the subcutis of pads of dogs and cats. Wolves do not have sweat glands on their feet.

Subcutaneous (adj.) as in subcutaneous fat.
