Double Suspension Gallop
An asymmetrical, four-beat, leaping gait in which there are two suspension phases. In the first extended suspension phase, forelimbs extend forwards while the hind limbs extend backwards, and in the second collected suspension phase both fore- and hind limbs are gathered (airborne) under the body.
All four limbs contact the ground separately, none in unison.
This type of suspended gallop is adopted by sighthounds, short-legged dogs, and cats (and is exemplified by cheetahs).
Also known as rotatory gallop.
Cf. single suspension gallop, supported gallop
